Department of English
Graduate Teaching Associate Hiring Policy and Application Guidelines
Effective Spring Quarter 2015, Updated Spring Quarter 2018
Overview
The Department of English benefits its graduate students by providing teaching opportunities in the stretch college writing program while they are pursuing their degrees. Since many of our M.A. and M.A. TESOL students plan to teach in community colleges, adult schools, and secondary schools after they graduate, the opportunity to teach in these programs gives them hands-on classroom experience and responsibility, under the careful observation and supervision of experienced lecturers and administrators in the English Department抯 Composition Program. This opportunity to teach also provides modest financial support for our graduate students, thus enabling our department to maintain graduate enrollments and to compete with sister institutions in the region. We believe that this opportunity to teach renders our graduates more competitive in the job market when they finish their degrees.
Note: The Graduate Teaching Associate (G.T.A.) experience is an internship associated with the student抯 pursuit of the M.A. or M.A. TESOL degree. It is not an avenue to continuing employment in the department. Once graduate students have completed their academic programs and hold the M.A. or M.A TESOL degree, they may apply to the department for employment as lecturers, subject to the normal processes of lecturer hiring.
Graduate Teaching Associates are eligible to teach in the stretch college writing program (English 100, 101, 103, 104) upon the positive recommendation of the Coordinator of Composition and the Department Chair.
Participation in the G.T.A. experience is not a right associated with enrollment in the department抯 M.A. or M.A. TESOL programs. Reappointment to a second or subsequent quarter抯 teaching-experience is dependent upon the continued positive recommendation of the Coordinator of Composition and the Department Chair, and of course, the availability of classes and funds.
Preference in Graduate Teaching Associate appointments is given to graduate students who have not work as G.T.A.s in the department in the past. A Graduate Teaching Associate may teach no more than 6 units in a given semester.
Graduate Teaching Associates work under the direct observation and supervision of experienced lecturers and administrators in the English department抯 Composition Program. The Coordinator of Composition and the Department Chair have ultimate responsibility for the supervision and evaluation of Graduate Teaching Associates.
Requirements for Initial Appointments and Reappointments
Classified or Conditionally Classified status in the English M.A. or M.A. TESOL program.
Completion of English 6750 (Theory and Practice of Composition) with a grade of B or better.
Satisfactory completion of one quarter of English 6508 (Supervised Tutoring and Teaching for TESOL students) or English 6608 (Supervised Tutoring and Teaching).
Positive recommendation of the Coordinator of Composition or the Department Chair.
Positive written recommendation of the mentoring teacher after completion of English 6508 or 6608.
Evidence of steady progress toward the completion of the M.A. degree. [G.T.A.抯 must enroll in at least 1 unit of 600-level English applicable to their degrees in each quarter in which they teach. Outstanding Incomplete or Report-in-Progress grades do not count for this purpose.
Satisfaction of the University Writing Skills Requirement. (See the University Catalog for the various ways of satisfying this requirement.)
Graduate grade-point average of 3.5 or better.
Duties of Graduate Teaching Associates
G.T.A.抯 serve as primary instructors of stretch college writing classes, English 100-101 or English 103-104. They work under the direct guidance and supervision of administrators of the department抯 Composition Program. Their teaching responsibilities include developing a syllabus, lecturing, facilitating and directing classroom discussions/activities; administering class exercises and examinations; assigning class papers and providing students with formative and summative feedback; marking and returning exercises, examinations, and papers in a timely manner; conferencing with students on a regular basis; and assigning course grades. G.T.A.抯 must follow university and department policies with respect to the add-drop process, the awarding of incomplete grades, student grievances, and the submission of grades at the end of the quarter. G.T.A.抯 are required to keep one official 搊ffice hour per week for each class taught, at a time and in a place convenient for the students. G.T.A.抯 are expected to use the resources of the BLACKBOARD system in the management of their classes. They are also required to attend and participate in the various group meetings scheduled by program administrators (including the English T.A. listserv).
Policies and procedures for the evaluation of G.T.A.抯 are communicated by email at the beginning of the first quarter of employment. The G.T.A. evaluation form is available from the Coordinator of Composition or the Department Chair.
G.T.A. Application Process
Initial G.T.A. appointments are always made in the fall semester. In the preceding spring quarter, applicants should assemble the following materials in a Google Drive to be shared with the Coordinator of Composition, the Coordinator of Stretch English, and the Department Chair. Applicants who prefer to submit paper documents can drop them off at the Depart Chair抯 office (MB 2575) by the due date. These materials are due May 21 each year and will be reviewed by a hiring committee assembled by the Coordinator of Composition. Appointment recommendations from the hiring committee should be communicated to the Chair no later June 10 each year.
Letter of application to the G.T.A. program;
Up-to-date resume or curriculum vitae;
Brief statement of teaching philosophy;
Teaching availability for fall and spring semester;
Written recommendation from the mentor teacher who supervised the applicant抯 internship experience in CSUEB抯 Composition Program;
Name of ONE additional CSUEB English faculty member who may be contacted for a recommendation.
Applicants will also have a 20-30 minute interview with the hiring committee. Interviews are typically scheduled during the last regular class meeting of English 6508 and English 6608. If not currently enrolled in one of these classes, you should contact the Department Chair to schedule an interview.
As an Equal Opportunity Employer, CSUEB does not discriminate on the basis of any protected categories: age, ancestry, citizenship, color, disability, gender, immigration status, marital status, national origin, race, religion, sexual orientation, or veteran抯 status. The University is committed to the principles of diversity in employment and to creating a stimulating learning environment for its diverse student body.
